1. How Journalist Covered Pearl Harbor: Dec 8, 1941

“Today they may have Tweeted: “Thousands dead in Hawaii after JP attack. Worst ever on homeland. FDR: US in it to win it.” But on Dec. 8, 1941, one day after the bloodiest attack on U.S. soil by a foreign country, news organizations attempted to make sense of it all.”

“Liam Neeson recently said some interesting things about portraying (the voice of) Aslan in the Narnia movies.”
“According to Forensic Science International, caffeine is fatal to humans in does of 5 grams or more, but how many Lokos would it take to reach the limit?”
“SO WOULD President Sarah Palin have been able to prevent the embarrassment of WikiLeaks? You betcha. “Inexplicable,” was her first tweeted reaction to the affair: “I recently won in court to stop my book ‘America by Heart’ from being leaked, but US Govt can’t stop WikiLeaks’ treasonous act?”
“Faith” is an important word and concept for Christians. We are saved because we have faith in Jesus Christ. Protestants believe in sola fide, meaning that we are saved by “faith alone” and not by our works or obedience. The Bible teaches that faith is associated with a specific person (Jesus Christ), knowledge, or a set of beliefs.”

Sweet Sermon (well actually a lecture)….

I love talking to people about religion… I love talking about religion with people who don’t agree with me… I love Tim Keller… Therefore, I love this video! Take the time to watch it!

The Bible is Full of Contradictions?

You may have heard the old argument about “Bible contradictions.”  This argument has of course been shot full of holes, answered, and refuted thousands of times. But since the New Atheism movement likes to take old arguments and make them sound and look new (i.e. cool charts, angry blog rants, and scholarly sounding arguments), people are still running around (like my Profs at school) thinking they have figured out the ultimate argument against the Bible.  Most recently, Sam Harris and Fast Company have made a chart about Bible contradictions. But anybody with a little sagacity can see that it is a old argument with a new skin.

Chart on Bible Contradictions (439 lines)…

Infografic on Bible cross-references (over 60,000 lines).

“This cross-reference chart does not prove the Bible is not filled with contradictions, but it is a graphic representation of the unity, harmony, and consistency of the Bible.”

Here are some helpful resources if you want to refute the Bible contradiction argument, or here are some things to think about Bible naysayers:

The Four Holy Gospels…

Take a look at this “new” book (by new, I mean that the book is old, the art is new). I have seen this artist’s work before and it is very cool. This is a perfect example of being a Christian and an artist, not just making some weird form of “christian art.” This project is on amazon for 37% off (pre-sale price)! Christmas gift idea?

From the Crossway blog:

Makoto Fujimura, one of the century’s most highly regarded artists, has illuminated the Four Holy Gospels. Fujimura is known for his use of traditional Japanese Nihonga techniques and his passion for reconnecting Christian faith with fine art. This will mark the first time in nearly 400 years that an illuminated book of the four Gospels has been undertaken by a single artist. . . .

Editions of The Four Holy Gospels will be available January 31, 2011. An exhibition of the works featured in The Four Holy Gospels will take place from December 9 through January 9 at the Dillon Gallery in New York City.

Ray Ortlund Knows How to Post…

Ray Ortlund is becoming one of my favorite people to read. This is not even something he wrote, but he knows how to post some awesomeness. From a post named “I am… nothing”

I am royal, I am lordly, I am mighty, I am honored, I am exalted, I am glorified, I am powerful, I am all-powerful, I am brilliant, I am lion-brave, I am manly, I am supreme, I am noble.”

Adad-Nirari II, in Daniel David Luckenbill, Ancient Records of Assyria and Babylonia (Chicago, 1926), I:110, italics added.

Thanksgiving in the Scriptures

I am totally taking this directly from my good friend Steve Webster’s Blog… I am so thankful for him…

Psalm 92:1

[ How Great Are Your Works ] A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath. It is good to give thanks to the LORD,to sing praises to your name, O Most High;

Psalm 145:8-13

8The LORD is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9The LORD is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
10All your works shall give thanks to you, O LORD,
and all your saints shall bless you!
11They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
   and tell of your power,
12to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

Isaiah 51:3

For the LORD comforts Zion;he comforts all her waste places and makes her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song.

2 Corinthians 9:10-15
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15 Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Philippians 4:6 (English Standard Version)
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Colossians 3:17 (English Standard Version)
17And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Revelation 7:9-12

9After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
